Reduction in water testing costs
The Challenge
The site presented a number of operational challenges that made maintaining consistent water system performance more complex. Variable occupancy patterns, driven by term schedules, holiday periods and changes in room and facility usage, resulted in significant fluctuations in water demand throughout the year. This meant that some areas of the system could experience periods of reduced turnover, increasing the potential for stagnation.
These challenges were compounded by ageing infrastructure, with sections of the water system having been modified and developed over time. As a result, there was limited visibility of how water was behaving across the system as a whole, making it more difficult to identify areas of poor circulation or changing conditions.
Certain outlets and facilities were also subject to irregular or low usage, creating additional areas of potential concern. Alongside this, inconsistent temperatures were being observed across key parts of the system, creating uncertainty around the effectiveness and reliability of existing temperature control measures. Together, these factors highlighted the need for greater visibility of actual system behaviour over time, rather than relying solely on individual readings taken during periodic site visits.
Inconsistent temperatures affected control confidence.

The Solution
To improve visibility and strengthen water safety management at The Holgate Academy, LCS carried out a diagnostics-led assessment of the hot and cold water systems, reviewing temperatures, usage patterns and existing control measures.
The live system was also validated against existing records and schematics, identifying low-use areas, documentation gaps and opportunities to improve monitoring and control.
This provided The Holgate Academy with a clearer understanding of how its water systems were actually performing, supporting more effective long-term compliance management.

Results &
Impact
Following the diagnostics-led assessment, The Holgate Academy gained a much clearer understanding of how its water systems were performing and where the key areas of risk required attention.
The assessment identified previously overlooked low-use and stagnation-prone areas, improved understanding of temperature behaviour and enabled remedial actions and flushing requirements to be prioritised according to operational risk.
With improved schematic accuracy and greater visibility of system performance, the academy now has a clearer and more structured foundation for managing Legionella risk and maintaining long-term compliance.
“The diagnostics-led assessment provided The Holgate Academy with a clearer understanding of how its water systems were performing, identifying areas of concern and providing a stronger foundation for ongoing Legionella management.”

What's Next
Following the diagnostics-led assessment, The Holgate Academy now has a clearer understanding of its water systems, the areas requiring attention and the factors influencing performance.
The findings provide a stronger foundation for ongoing Legionella management, allowing flushing, monitoring and remedial actions to be better targeted according to actual system behaviour and risk..
Better information to support ongoing monitoring, maintenance and water safety decisions.
